When it comes to boosting nutritious food and drink options for young riders at Nowa Nowa Pony Club, fresh produce is their superstar ingredient. Located in East Gippsland, the club has a team of 15 horses and riders.
“Using good ingredients that are really fresh is the key,” said Ms Tamara French, who helps with marketing initiatives at Nowa Nowa Pony Club.
Since implementing the Vic Kids Eat Well initiative with support from an on-the-ground health professional , Nowa Nowa Pony Club has completed 4 bites including ‘refuel with fruit”, “switch to healthier snacks”, “switch to healthier drinks”, and “new healthier food options are introduced and promoted”.
They have introduced home-cooked meals to their menu, including veggie-loaded cottage pies, baked potatoes, pumpkin soup and salad rolls.
The kids have loved these changes.
“Our kids are all fantastic eaters as we have some very talented cooks that also double as parents! This encourages all of us to sit and enjoy a meal together,” said Ms French.
The club has also changed up the half-time snack, only offering fresh fruit. Kids are now enjoying freshly cut oranges and apples with a side of grapes to refuel before heading back out for their next session.
“Kids love the smoothies for a quick and nutritious hit of energy without getting off the horses,” said Ms French.
Ms French said that the changes made through Vic Kids Eat Well have created a positive impact within the community.
“The sharing of food has created better friendships and a much more social environment,” said Ms French.
